Mlungisi Substation Revamp To Begin

Enoch Mgijima LM introduced a contractor that has been appointed to refurbish the Mlungisi substation today. The Municipality introduced the  electrical contractor appointed to work on Municipal substations.

The substation has been top of the prioritisation because of it’s status as it is old with a number of elements to be either repaired or replaced. This is a multiyear project that is currently estimated at R88 million. In this first phase, R 8.7 million has been set aside for part of the work.

Mlungisi substation is currently not fully operational after some damages on switchgear units last year. The municipality opted for a Ring Main Unit (RMU) as a temporary measure  to ensure continuity of supply to residents.

This is a 10 week project where the following will be done:

. Installations of perimeter fence

. Earthworks & Earthmat

. Foundation

. Steel support

. 6*MV switchgears

In future phases, two new 20 MVA transformers will be installed and more switch gears will be added.

Funding for this project was acquired from the Department of Minerals and Energy as well as from Intergrated National Electrification Programme (INEP). Introducing the contractor, Portfolio Head for Technical Services Cllr Mangcotywa urged communities to give support to the contractor and those who will be participating in the project. He said “most of the damages on electricity infrastructure are caused by illegal connections as well as theft and vandalism”. He urged community members to continue using electricity economically and refrain from illegal connections.

The Project Steering Committe was elected and actual work on the project will begin next week.
